I took the reference photos for this painting in May 2019 from Southside Drive on the south bank of the Merced river during a day trip to Yosemite with Karen.  It had snowed the night before and rained some early that morning, so the clouds and clear air were spectacular!  I loved the clouds framing El Capitan and the filtered sunlight on the meadow, which I used to highlight Mom and baby bear.  The bears were added for interest, but they are around!  I actually used an older photo of a bear that I had taken in Yosemite several years ago to do Momma bear.  If you look close with a magifying glass, you can see the eyes of the bears in the detail.  I took so many great photos that day it was hard to choose one to paint.  I’m sure I’ll paint several more from this trip before it’s over!
